Grey Import Insurance

Why Grey Import Insurance?

by Tim on February 17, 2011

Many people look to grey import cars in order to find a relatively inexpensive, reliable and high quality vehicle. However, where can you find Japanese import car insurance to cover your Daihatsu, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki or Toyota? Furthermore, what requirements must be fulfilled before the car is used on British roads?

Grey import vehicles are required to pass an SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test to be sure they are suitable for driving on UK roads. Even though these cars are designed for use in other countries, they typically have no problems passing the SVA test since they may be rebuilt to meet compliance requirements (e.g some vehicles may need a new windscreen to ensure the glass is thick enough to meet UK standards — required changes are usually minor).

Getting a specialised insurance policy is the best and cheapest option for your imported vehicle. Specialised brokers will be able to off you competitive rates and the level of cover you’re looking for. It’s likely that your insurance premium will be reduced if your car does not have multiple modifications.
