VW gets a facelift

by Tim on January 14, 2010

The famous and much-loved VW camper has had a rather impressive facelift thanks to Canadian designer, Alex Verdier. However, if its proposed price is anything to go by, campervan insurance is not going to be cheap!

Whilst the old VW campervans aren’t known for their environmentally-friendly engines, Verdier wants to make sure his version — called (rather unimaginately) the Verdier — is.

The plan is to put a 4-speed automatic turbocharged bio-diesel hybrid drivetrain into the camper (according to an article on Wired) which means the vehicle will be powered by both electricity and recycled vegetable oil.

Of course, with an engine like that, you’d expect it the campervan to be kitted out with plenty of other high-tech gadgetery. Well it pretty much is –the vehicle will have an onboard computer, as well as a GPS system powered by the solar panels on its roof.  The computer will also be able to position the solar panels for the best charge.

If the van makes it into production, it will cost about £75,000. However, Verdier also plans on releasing a more basic model which would be available at around £40,000.

Whether Verdier’s concept gets built or not, there’s still plenty of great campers and motorhomes on the road already. According to Which Motorcaravan the Adria Matrix 680SP is the best all round motorhome for familes, but for the “cool factor” you can’t beat the old VWs.
