VOSA decision effects UK Horsebox users

by Tim on March 16, 2009

Horse and Hound magazine has reported that the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has ruled that anyone with a full-time (horsebox driving) job is no longer allowed to drive their horsebox at the weekend.Since 2006 it has been law that drivers keep a record of driving times and that drivers must take a legal weekly rest of 24-45 hours from work.

VOSA explains that ‘working in an office Monday to Friday counts as five daily periods, therefore after the sixth day, the driver requires a weekly rest period.’

Horse and Hound has pointed out that the advice given by VOSA contradicts previous guidelines. Racel Molloy, part of the British Horse Society, has pointed out that ‘There must be a huge amount of non-compliance out there’.

The law could have an impact on horsebox owners, possibly effecting the validity of their horsebox insurance should they drive during a rest period.
