UK landlords register to be abandoned

by Tim on June 15, 2010

In a bid to remove bureaucracy from the rental sector the Con/Lib government will not be pushing forward with the proposed landlord register.

While the register was proposed to raise standards in the renting market, it faced much criticism from buy-to-let landlords.

The head of the National Landlord Association, David Salusbury, has stated that the well-meaning register would not have ‘rooted out rogue landlords’, going on to state that it may well have become a tool to ‘penalise the law abiding’. Additional costs were also a worry, particularly when some property owners spend an awful lot on landlords insurance.

However, despite many landlords being happy to avoid the red tape that the regulations would have led to, they still believe some regulation is important. For example, John Heron, MD of Paragon Mortgages believes that letting agent regulation is becoming essential — both landlords and tenants have fallen foul of undesirable letting agents of late (of course there are many in the sector doing a good job too!).

According to the article published on propertywire.com, both tenants and landlords believe that the fact that anybody can become a letting agent needs to be addressed.
