A taxi firm based in Manchester is upping security measures, as well as making customer’s feel safer.
The firm has decided to send customers a picture of the driver that will pick them up to their mobile phone. This feature, according to the owner has been particularly popular with women and parents.
The firm has decided to take action as taxi driver offences are regularly in the news — often the drivers are unlicensed;a crime in itself. In the capital alone there were over 90 taxi-related sexual offences.
Unlicensed drivers are a threat to public safety, with no criminal record check performed. They’re also without taxi insurance, making them a danger to other road users too.
In Manchester all cabs must be exactly the same colour to make sure that fake taxis stand out.
Of course, bogus cabs aren’t just bad for public safety, but also for the industry itself. Unlicensed drivers may offer punters impossibly low prices to lure them in, taking away genuine business from other drivers.
The taxi firm’s owner warned that taxi touts aren’t only unlicensed drivers, but some are cabbies that travel into nearby cities to make additional funds.
