An Iraqi taxi driver was supposedly used as an evidence source to back up the Iraq Invasion of ’03 – taxi insurance might not be enough to cover this cabbie’s claims!
The Times has reported that the taxi driver supposedly overheard Iraqi military commanders discussing weapons of mass destruction – his recollections were used in an important dossier to support the invasion of the country.
However, according to MP Adam Holloway, the dossier that MI6 provided noted the taxi driver’s claims were considered “verifiably inaccurate”, but this was ignored by the Government at the time. The author of the MI6 dossier is expected to be questioned soon.
It’s hard not to wonder what other information is gleaned on the thousands of taxi journeys made each day. The Guardian has an interesting thread open in which readers are sharing the details of their own interesting taxi conversations.
Unsurprisingly, most of the topics veer from crude to libellous. However, most interesting is one poster writing about a London taxi driver that claimed he had a contract with the local hospital to drive overdue pregnant women over speed bumps in order to induce birth. An unlikely story? If you’d like to read more of the post, the page can he found here.
