Motorhome insurance

Motorhomes and sat navs

by Tim on December 9, 2009

You’ve probably heard about drivers transferring their in-car sat nav over to their motorhome, only to end up claiming on their motorhome insurance policy.

Satellite navigation has become almost de rigour for most car owners these days – some people even seem to use their sat nav for journeys they’ve made multiple times. It’s a shame that bad driving and a glowing screen that utters robot-like instructions seem to go so happily hand in hand.

However, when you’re out in your motorhome or campervan, you’re quite often driving long distances along roads that you’ve never driven on before or down country lanes with concealed entrances.  It’s here that a sat nav comes into its own.

Here’s the problem though – most sat nav systems really aren’t designed for motorhomes! A typical motorhome is much wider and taller than your average car, meaning by following a sat nav you may end up in a tight space or, as alluded to in the first paragraph, giving your pride and joy a bit of a ding.

To save drivers from this upsetting outcome, there are in fact a number of sat nav systems suitable for motorhomes and caravans manufactured by reputable brands that differ from the typical in-car systems. As we have no brand preferences here, we thought it best to tell you that they’re only a Google search away.

Of course, even if you do decide to purchase a motorhome-specific sat nav, remember you’re your own boss and that accidents happen when you stop paying attention to the road ahead. Your sat nav is effectively a helpful map reader and not your copilot — ultimately, the best navigation device available is your own eye site!
