The BBC Magazine has reported that six pubs a day close in the UK.Some people believe that pubs are closing due to more people drinking alcohol at home.
It’s likely that people are drinking at home due to the recession, but with the price of alcohol in supermarkets so low, it would appear that pubs and supermarkets are now in direct competition.
Mark Hastings, part of the British Beer and Pub Association, states that the ‘cost base of the [pub] industry has increased by £520m over the last year’ and with the current recession passing on these costs will stop even more customers drinking out.
Of course, these costs mean that competeting with supermarkets is just not an option.
