Public liability insurance needed in the family home?

by Tim on June 30, 2009

The Telegraph has reported that a father who wanted his son to learn about the home-run family business for his work experience was contacted by the local council and asked to pay public liability insurance. The father in question, Derek Coyle, noted that the council’s actions were ‘bureaucracy gone made … He lives here anyway.’

The council believed that if Coyle’s son was to work from home with his father, the house would need to be surveyed for health and safety, despite the fact that the boy already lives in the place of work . Mr Coyle believed that his son was ‘no more at risk than he would be anywhere else.’
