Planning a motorhome trip in the US

by Tim on March 22, 2010

Motorhome insurance paid up, tires pumped up, fridge fully stocked, week in Devon booked. But wait — somethings not quite right. Your thirst for all things EPIC is yet to be quenched … it’s time to consider a motorhome trip to the USA.

Of course, unless you’re willing to spend a lot of money on petrol and a lot of time on the road it’s unlikely your going to be driving your own motorhome or campervan in America.

To make a trip to the US worthwhile — it is a long flight after all — you’ll want at least 10 days ‘vanning out there, although three weeks is the recommended visit time. Of course, if this is a family trip that’s a lot of time stuck together in a confined space. Whilst it’s best to face the fact that there will be at least one or two arguments on the road, there’s plenty of ways to stop this. Make sure you plan your trips; breaking up long drives with stops on the way for food and fresh air can really help keep stress levels down.

The Telegraph has recently run a great article on how to plan an American motorhome trip. Whilst offering tips on what not to forget (take down the TV aerial, wind in the awning etc), they also recommend that those new to the US take the famous Grand Circle road trip — this allows everyone to catch a glimpse of the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Zion National Park.
