Parents to monitor young drivers

by Tim on March 12, 2009

The Times has recently reported that parents can keep an eye on their children’s driving, using a ’spy-under-the-bonnet device’. The device is capable of detecting dangerous manoevures. This means that parents who log in to the device via the internet after their child returns from a driving trip, can see stats and figures that will alert them to any dangerous driving committed on the trip.

Trialled by Staffordshire County Counicl, the system has proven to be a useful tool. Young drivers who agreed to use the product consumed 10 per cent less petral and, of course, made efforts to drive as safely as possible.

The device is aimed to help new drivers get through the ‘crucial high-risk period,’ according to Andrew Howard, the AA’s head of road safety. This is a time when young drivers who have just passed their driving test are prone to showing off.

Perhaps the biggest beneift of the system is the ability to lower the cost of young driver car insurance permiums. The newspaper reports that it can offer young drivers up to a 25% discount if they fit the device – a considerable saving.
