Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has suspended the third phase of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
The mayor has claimed that he has called time on he third phase due to the impact it would have on small businesses in the current economic climate.
However, this does not mean that this phase of the LEZ will not be implemented sometime further into the future.
Phase three of the LEZ is aimed at tackling smaller vehicles guilty of air pollution, such as vans and minibuses. If implemented it would cost owners nearly £2000 for pollution abatement equipment, £15,000 for a new vehicle or charges between £100 and £500 a day for entry into Greater London.
Currently the fist two phases of the LEZ tackle larger polluters such as lorries, buses and coaches.
The mayor believes that now is not the time to charge small businesses, charities and self-employed Londoners for polluting and is looking is for more imaginative ways to lower fuel emissions.
