Post Online has reported that Yes Insurance believes the British government should follow Spain’s example and propose to cut speed limits across the country.
The Spanish government aims to lower the motorway speed limit to 50mph and the speed limit within towns down to 25mph.
Yes Insurance’s research shows that 9 out of 10 men and around 8 out of 10 women regularly break the motorway speed limit of 70mph. However, as eco-drivers are keen to point out, driving fast will not necessarily speed up journey times.
Paul Purdy, of Yes Insurance, explained how driving faster leads to more ‘bunching and heavy breaking which traditionally disrupts traffic flow on motorways’. Moreover, he goes on to say that driving slower will save UK drivers ‘around 15% on their fuel bills, whilst at the same time cutting road deaths and injuries by up to 20%’.
We can only hope that if these figures ring true, motor insurance premiums would drop as cars travelling at lower speeds would decrease the risk of road accidents.
