private motor insurance

It’s snow joke

by Tim on December 22, 2009

Apologies for the terrible title. But anyone who was out in a car yesterday or this morning will know that cars and snow are no good for a lot of peoples’ private motor insurance.

Thousands of motorists in the south east of England were stranded in their vehicles after heavy snowfall led to gridlocked roads in Hampshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. Many other areas in Britain were also affected.

The AA has reported that Monday 21st December was their busiest day in 10 years in terms of call outs and also the busiest morning for its insurance company too, with over 100 claims relating to snow and ice before lunchtime.

Financial news website, Every Investor, has an interesting list of AA statics taken from the morning of 21st December which are below in an shorter form – amazingly there were no injuries in this list:

-31 on road car collisions
-6 cars failed to stop at junctions hitting other vehicles
-11 vehicles found their way into ditches
-14 cars collided with parked cars
-7 collided with curbs and caused serious damage
-29 cars hit stationary objects such as lamp posts
-2 accidents were caused by ice and snow falling off lorries

That’s a lot of accidents in one morning. Of course, it’s worth remembering that the AA are one of many insurance companies and that these figures can most likely be multiplied many times over.

For anyone planning to drive in the current conditions, remember to de-ice your car and cut your speed significantly, even if the snow looks as though it’s melting.
