Mercedes have begun to manufacture a vehicle to compete with one of the great icons of British culture, the hallowed black cab.
The Mercedes Vito Traveliner has been designed to imitate the 25 foot turning circle of the current London taxi. The Vito is supposedly more eco-friendly than the iconic black cab and has very low fuel emissions.
The Mercedes Vito is not the only new rival to compete with the traditional black cab; The Peugeot E7 is another contender. The electric powered ‘green cab’ has a top speed of 60mph and should, by foregoing a petrol engine, be even more eco-friendly than the Mercedes Vito Traveliner.
The creator of the E7, Gavin Gillies, has explained that Peugeot aren’t ‘making anyone switch to an alternative taxi. We simply want London taxi firms and drivers to have the opportunity to make their own, informed decision on what vehicle best suits their business’.
No matter what your choice of taxi, whether it be a black cab or any of its new rivals, it is important to make sure you have the appropriate taxi insurance.
