Is The End Nigh For The Ice Cream Van?

by Tim on October 29, 2008

New council penned rules could spell the end for the traditional British ice cream van.

Icecream Van InsuranceThe Telegraph has reported that Worcester City Council has disallowed ice cream vendors to play their melodic and much-loved chimes for more than 4 seconds at a time, making it harder for potential customers to locate the vehicles.

However, this is the not the only new law that has been passed against ice cream vans.  Vans must not trade within sight of other ice cream vans, they must be at least 166 feet from a school during school hours and a minimum of 25 feet away from a religious building on days of worship, emitting a maximum volume of 80 decibels.

These rules may please the local council but have enraged the ice cream van community. Tom Davidson, a member of  the Ice Cream Alliance has stated that it is becoming ‘harder and harder to make an honest living … councils and MPs are trying to put mobile sellers out of business. It is hard enough to compete against the supermarkets in this industry without all these new rules coming in”.

If you drive or own an Ice Cream Van, it is essential to have the appropriate Ice Cream Van Insurance to protect your vehicle and yourself.
