HGV crime to affect haulage insurance?

by Tim on February 19, 2010

Ever-rising truck crime has led to a policeman raising a point that may worry haulage firms.

RoadTrasport.com reports that PC Steve Rounds has instigated a debated criticising truck drivers who fail to use service areas and truck stops, but stop in lay-bys. He believes that insurance companies should invalidate a the firms haulage insurance cover if their driver fails to rest in a designated area. Part of his statement can be read below

“It’s about time insurance companies started to exert some influence by withdrawing cover unless a vehicle is properly parked in a service area or truck park.”

However, unsuprisinly the industry is less than impressed with PC Rounds’ comment. A haulage firm owner has stated that his company will not pay for drivers to use truck stops or service stations as they are too expensive.

In an industry where the average profit margin is around 3 per cent, it’s understandable that people are unwilling to shell out for services they deem overpriced.
