A haulier in Manea has had four attacks on their premises within a month — all raids were focused on obtaining the firm’s fuel stocks.
Anyone involved in the haulage industry will know that profit margins are incredibly low, whilst costs can be high – petrol, repairs, haulage insurance etc.
These thefts, reported by the BBC, have led to the firm in question buying petrol from garages rather than purchasing in bulk.
The firms owner, as well as the Road Haulage Association (RHA), believes that the high price of fuel, bought about by duty increases are to blame for the recent spate of fuel thefts.
RHA spokesman claimed that ‘The recession and rising prices have made a perennial problem worse.’
Police advise that fuel levels in lorries should be low overnight and that vehicles should be kept inside whenever possible.
