News that ford is to bring out a global car model has surprised many industry bodies as well as consumers. American car owners’ American car insurance looks like it might not be as American as it used to be.
The model that Ford have decided to globalise is their Focus. The current incarnation of the Focus is particularly popular on mainland Europe and in the UK, but is yet to have made a mark in the USA.
However, the Times reports that Alan Mullay –who is chief executive of Ford — believes that taste in automobiles, once unique to each continent is becoming more similar.
Whilst the USA is most adverse to Focus-sized vehicles, Ford believe they can tempt the American market by filling smaller cars with the features usually found in more expensive cars.
An article in the Telegraph appears sceptical of Ford’s big ambitions. Jim Hall, an industry expert, believes that outside of Manhattan, Boston and San Francisco there’s not much demand for small vehicles.
Whilst the demand for small cars isn’t great at the moment, green cars are becoming more and more popular — although this is yet to be backed by sales.
Either way, with people low on money and the environment becoming a focus more than ever, it’s about time America catches up with motoring trends.
