The Office of Fair Trading’s (OFT) recent report on the UK’s secondhand car maket revealed that one in five secondhand car buyers experienced a problem with their recently purchased vehicle.
An article on the BBC website, states that the largest volume of complaints came from buyers who purchased a second hand vehicle from an independent dealer — this was in fact the biggest consumer complaint of the year and has been for the past four.
Often garages fail to offer the free repairs that should be included under the Sale of Goods Act and consumers are left out of pocket.
The OFT have also noticed other worrying habits taking place in the industry — some dealers pretent to be private sellers, whilst others illegally state a car will be sold as seen (offering no refunds).
However, despite the worrying results on show, the OFT belives that current consumer protection laws are adequate to deal with the industry.
