According to an article on the BBC website, motor traders have reported a drop in new car sales last month (July) — the first time in sales have fallen for a year.
In comparison to July ‘09, July ‘10 saw a sales drop of nearly 15 per cent. Dealerships are blaming the fact that the scrappage scheme is over and that the economy is still struggling.
According to Paul Everitt, of the SMMT, the drop in sales is to be expected due to the lack of consumer confidence. However, most dealerships are still on target to reach forecasted sales.
The drop in new car sales isn’t exclusive the the UK. In fact, across the whole of Western Europe, new car sales in July fell by nearly 20 per cent in comparison to the previous year. Germany was hit particularly hard, with a percentile drop more than twice the size of the UK’s.
