The Independent has recently reported that many UK drivers who travel abroad in their car are unaware that their fully comprehensive policies may be invalid overseas.
Peter Gerrard of moneysupermaket.com has advised UK motorists to ‘Never assume you are covered abroad – always check your policy’.
It is quite common for insurance policies that are fully comprehensive in the UK to be reduced to only third-party cover in other countries. This means that in an accident your own costs will not be covered.
However, it is possible to increase your overseas cover with a one-off payment. Most insurers will charge between £20 to £50 to provide you with fully comprehensive motor insurance in Europe, providing you’re there for less than 90 days.
