The Guardian has recently reported that bus and coach builder, Wrightbus, has cut 235 jobs.
The job cuts are thought to have been caused by the cancellation of two large contracts – despite the firm signing an £11 million partnership to provide buses for Arriva’s London service (a company that continues to grow despite the economic recession).
Wrightbus is situated in Northern Ireland; known as a successful company, it is in fact one the most prominent exporting companies in that area and the largest bus and coach manufacturer in the UK.
However, it may not be all doom and gloom for the bus and coach industry.
AutomotiveWorld.com has reported that the sales of large buses (over 8.5 tonnes) had risen in January of this year by 58.3% compared with January 2008.
It is also worth noting that the constant championing of public transport services and the growth of service providers like Arriva, along with movements towards the use of eco-friendly buses and coaches by councils may give bus and coach firms a chance to prosper despite the recession.
