What to look for when searching for campervan insurance?

When thinking of campervans, most people immediately envision the classic Volkswagen camper --whether that's the Type 2 split windscreen model or the slightly newer bay-window model. However, there are many more VW models that class as campers and there's also plenty of self and factory-converted vans made by other manufacturers that could also be called campervans.

Motorhome and campervan cover are essentially the same and various factors may affect your insurance premium. Quite often brokers will want to know what you use your camper for. Whilst it's not the norm for people to drive their campervan every day, it's not unheard off. As you can imagine, a campervan that spends more time on the road will be put in more danger from other drivers and the risks of the road, thus insurance premiums can often be more expensive for these vehicles.

One thing that may be worth noting for those using classic or older campervans is a policy that offers some form of "betterment" agreement -- also refferend to as "new for old" cover. Often, if the insurance broker pays for repairs and replacements on an older vehicle, the overall value of the insured camper may increase -- the new parts are worth more than the old parts.. When this happens the insurance company may ask the insured to pay towards this increase in value. With new for old cover the insured will be spared the cost of having to pay for more expensive new parts.

Brokers often reward owners that are members of a campervan club. Being part of a specialist club illustrates that an owner is enthusiastic about his vehicle and likely to be an even more careful driver! Of course, your premium will also depend on whether or not you're looking to insure the contents of your campervan -- the more costly your belongings are, the more expensive your camper cover may be.

So...

Whether you fulfil the surfer stereotype that is attached to the campervan in the UK, or you just appreciate a good design when you see one, like motorhome insurance, campervan brokers reward careful drivers with lower premiums.
